Most budgeting apps felt strict and stressful to the people we interviewed. They wanted something encouraging that helped them improve a little each month rather than feel guilty about every purchase.
We studied how people think about money day to day and designed around small, achievable goals.

Sketches and wireframes
Early sketches focused on the home screen, where users decide in seconds whether an app is worth opening. We tested several layouts and chose the one that felt most supportive and least overwhelming.
